AJAX PLAYERS SALUTING FANS AFTER COMPLETING 3-0 WIN STORY: Ajax Amsterdam overpowered rivals Feyenoord 3-0 at home on Sunday (January 20) to close to just one point behind Dutch Eredivisie leaders FC Twente. After withstanding a strong beginning from the visitors, Ajax began to assert their offensive dominance and Viktor Fischer took full advantage of some poor defending. He rounded Feyenoord goal-keeper Erwin Mulder after five minutes, was on hand to capitalise on a defensive lasp by Joris Mathijsen and should have bagged a hat-trick before half-time, if not for a poor finish. It would not matter, however, as Siem de Jong completed the scoring midway through the second spell and while Ajax were reduced to ten men when Ricardo van Rhijn received a second yellow card for a challenge on Jean-Paul Boetius, the result was never in doubt. The only thing that threatened to halt Ajax was the roof inside the Amsterdam Arena which began leaking snow with time almost up. But that could not damper the spirits as they enjoyed a comfortable triumph in a match stepped in Dutch history. The result lifted Ajax to 40 points from 19 matches, the same as PSV Eindhoven, who enjoy a superior goal difference. FC Twente top the standings with 41 points.
