If you’re a homeowner looking to add value to your property, a kitchen renovation is a smart way to get the most bang for your buck. Just keep in mind that a full-on remodel doesn’t come cheap. To manage your makeover on a tight budget, follow these three tips that’ll help cut costs AND impress potential buyers.
First up are countertops. While granite countertops look really nice, they can be expensive – costing around $150 or more per linear foot. For someone with a limited budget of $25,000 or less, that’s just not cost effective. There are some manufactured products that look nearly as nice minus the hefty price tag. Check out a synthetic solid countertop like DuPont’s Corian or a high-end laminate from Formica, which can cost about $50 per linear foot.
Next is lighting. Focus on under-cabinet lighting and recessed ceiling fixtures. While these may seem like small additions, they have major impact on a kitchen remodel. Not only does upgraded lighting help open up the space, but it also makes the kitchen feel more contemporary and inviting -- a big plus for buyers.
Lastly, consider performing some of the light work yourself. This can include painting, purchasing new appliances or removing drywall. Doing this will help reduce the overall cost of your kitchen remodel. Be sure to consult with your contractor first before trying anything on your own – and steer clear of any structural work. Save that for the pros.
