A Mid Growth IRA Pick with Valuation Consciousness
Christine: Hi I am Christine Benz from Morning Star. You have until April 15th to fund an IRA for the 2009 tax year. So all this week I will be talking to some of Morning Star’s experts to get their top picks for funding an IRA.
Today I have Russ Kinnel with me. Russ is Morning Star’s Director of Fund Research. Russ, thanks for being here.
Russ: Good to be here.
Christine: So Russ what is your top pick for funding an IRA?
Russ: A really like Prime Cap Odyssey Aggressive Growth. It is a mid- growth fund with about five year track record.
Christine: So tell us why you like it and also tell us why, I know there are some vanguard funds run by the same team but they are all closed. So you are throwing this one out as a good idea in it, it has nice little cost too.
Russ: That’s right the Vanguard Funds are all closed but you can get a look at them and get an idea of what kind of track record to expect from this fund which has only about five years of record. But you have great management, great fundamental investors which you don’t often get on a growth side. And tremendous stability which I also like in IRA fund because once you buy, you don’t want them keep best with your IRA funds.
These people are very stable management and just great investors.
Christine: So this is a somewhat more aggressive fund but it is somewhat valuation conscious in a little different from other mid cap growth in it – turn over nice and low.
Russ: That is right they are patient fundamental investors and they don’t get killed usually in bare market. You can look it 08 and they lost money to be sure but they lost less than others. If you look at the Vanguard Funds, they lost less and previous bare market so they do pay attention to evaluations but they are great. Long term investors and this fund amazingly is still small it is only about 600 billion in assets. So really it’s just about everything you look for and I just think if you are looking for a fund to own for 15 – 20 years. This is just a great one with tremendous appreciation potential.
Christine: Okay Russ sounds like a good pick, thanks for bringing it to us.
Russ: You are welcome.
Christine: Thanks for watching. I am Christine Benz for MorningStar.com.
