(Image source: USGS.gov / Al Jazeera )     BY ZACH TOOMBS     A 7.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska early Saturday triggered tsunami warnings but left the mainland largely unscathed.   According to the BBC and the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck 63 miles west of Craig, Alaska. Multiple aftershocks were also reported, though their effects weren’t felt by residents in Alaska or Canada.   However, the USGS did say, in a statement : "Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated … It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter."   The coastal areas at risk stretched from the southwest edge of Canada on Vancouver Island, seen here, to Cordova, Alaska — the northern point of the Gulf of Alaska. But, according to The New York Times , the USGS cancelled that tsunami warning just two hours after the quake. [Video: YouTube / TheThirdShift ]   Despite that, several Alaskan newspapers reported residents did take notice.   One citizen of Juneau told the city’s Empire newspaper the quake "shook my Juneau home violently enough to awaken the entire family.” But he added, “No apparent damage."   Meanwhile, in Sitka, Alaska, an employee at the town’s police department told the Alaska Dispatch “that they hadn't yet gotten any news of increased wave activity, but people were evacuating to higher ground and that the tsunami warning sirens had gone off in the community.”   Port Alexander, Alaska did report experiencing a tsunami shortly after 1 a.m., though that wave was only a half-foot larger than usual.
