But you can definitely pull it off without looking like Melanie Griffith in Working Girl. If you just adhere it to a very simple rule of geometry.
Picture a body as a triangle. If you are wearing something voluminous up-top, the triangle starts from the top and everything else should slim as it reaches your feet. With a more voluminous skirt, the triangle should be at the bottom and everything should slim as it reaches your neck.
Here I've paired a Karen Walker blouse with a slim fitting short from APC. This look is easiest to pull off if you just choose a more youthful print. It provides balance to the look and automatically steers it away from looking dated. And if you are not into shorts, choose a fitted pant or a slim jumper, it provides you same polished look.
