Audra: What’s in, what’s out and who cares? In 2010 you can break all the fashion rules and we met with Sarah Bernard, host of The Thread to find out how you can make wrong look oh so right. Sarah: Today we are talking about fashion rules that you should be breaking this year. And we’re going to show you the stars that have started breaking them already. The first rule is something my mom always told me not to do, never to wear a blue and black together coz you look like a bruise, right? Well, that is an old rule from 2009. In fact a lot of fashion designers like Mark Jacobs and Donna Karan and even Gucci have been sending models down the runway in this very chic combination. And here’s an example of how you can do it really affordably. This shirt that I’m wearing, this navy lace shirt is from Zara. I love the way it looks with a little tank top underneath and I think it goes great together with this pair of black trousers from Ihar Ronson at JCPenny. And then you finish it up with a little navy at the bottom with this really cool cut out platform shoes from Forever 21. Now this is a look that a lot of celebrities have been embracing like Anne Hathaway, Cameron Diaz, Hilary Swank, Kelly Riffa and Mary Kate Olsen and you should be doing it too. Let’s break another fashion rule. How about the one that says you’re not supposed to mix different patterns together. Well, be warned, this one can easily go wrong if you’re not careful. But here’s how. If you choose a print with a dominant color like I have here. This floral from HNM has this gorgeous violet purple all over it, you pick another pattern with the same dominant color. This sweater from Forever 21 has the exact same indigo purple that goes with it. You might not think these two would go together on the rack but you put it together and it actually makes an amazing original look. Rule breaking is so much fun. Isn’t it? Well, let’s do another one. How about the rule that you’re not supposed to wear sequins during the day? Well this year, we are completely embracing sequins not just for evening. Of course there’s always been sequins on the red carpet but a lot of designers lately have been showing it in casual day wear, too. And celebrities like Chloe Kardashian, Ciena Miller and Heyden Penetier have been spotted out rocking this trend. Here is a great example. This all over sequin blazer is so slouchy and comfortable you can also just notice the subtle sparkle in it if you get really close. This is from Charlotte Ruz. I like to pair it with some casual jeans from Blue Asphalts. But remember, you can also break some rules by having sequins on your pants for example. They don’t have to be just for jackets. A pair of sequin pants will look amazing with a slouchy t-shirt and that will give you the same casual effect. Next, we’re breaking a rule that’s going to make our shoe and handbag junkies very happy. We’ve always been told to match our handbag and our shoes and it’s really classy streamline look and if you’re wearing some crazy print I would advise you to do just that. But if you’re wearing something that’s all black or in one solid color combination, it’s really fun and fresh to wear totally different print bag and shoes. Now check out what I’m doing right here. I’ve got a pair of hot pink fuchsia shoes from Aldo that I’m wearing with a turquoise leopard print bag from Express. Or you can pair a leather and suede messenger bag with some really sexy python print pumps. Or you can pair a silver snakeskin clutch with some purple suede pumps. Just make sure that the hand bag and shoe combo are both of the same feel. That’s it for us. I’m Sarah Bernard, host of the Thread on Yahoo shine.
