Introduce ‘em to UK woman Clara Cowell, who The Lancashire Evening Post reports just turned 102 years old and FINALLY kicked the habit. She started in 1931, so if her dropping the decades, DECADES-long affair with cigarettes isn’t enough inspiration, we don’t know what is. But get this: it isn’t her health that prompted the move. In fact — one of her daughters told the Lancashire Evening Post: “ The secret to mum’s long life is a cigarette and a cup of tea with whiskey. That and hard work and poverty.” Okkkayyy. Whatever it takes, right? The family explains what they were really worried about was the falling ash. Still, The Daily Mail was inspired enough to write this headline: “It’s never too late to quit!” — and calculated Cowell had smoked almost 60,000 cigarettes in her lifetime. We’re happy for her, but we’re reminded of a recent study from the New England Journal of Medicine that says while smoking can cut off 10 years from a person’s life — those who quit by age 40 can get nine years back. So great-great-grandma Cowell missed that deadline by, oh, more than 60 years. But you know what? Kudos for getting it done: whatever the reason.
