Image Source: BBC BY CANDICE AVILES ANCHOR JASMINE BAILEY The oldest marathon runner in the world has officially retired at the age of 101.  Fauja Singh ran his last race, the Hong Kong 10k, on Sunday.  He told the BBC he’s glad to end his running career on a high. “I’m feeling very happy about the race, everytime I run I feel so fresh, you guys are doing your job every time you take a picture, i always want to run more.” It took the 101-year-old one hour and 32 minutes to finish the 10k race.  Not bad for a man who, according to the Examiner , ran his first full marathon when he was 89-years-old.  Over his running career, “Singh, who was a farmer in his native India, has completed nine 26.2-mile marathons in London, Toronto and New York.”   With his best time coming in at five hours and 40 minutes when he ran the 2003 Toronto Marathon.   According to The Huffington Post , Singh decided to start running to overcome depression after his wife and one of his sons died.  He says he has mixed emotions after running his last race, which has helped him move on.   While Singh’s running record is record breaking, there’s one problem standing in the way of why he isn’t being recognized for being the oldest marathon runner in history. The Deccan Herald notes his record isn’t “recognised by the Guinness World Records because he doesn’t have a birth certificate to prove his age, only a passport.”  But that doesn’t get him down too much because he says his main focus of running is to raise money for charity. When asked why the runner decided to retire he admitted his age is finally catching up with him.  He told the Independent , “I am hurt that I am going to retire.  I do not like the world “retire” because I can still run and jump on a bus.” He goes on to say, some of his secrets for his good health include exercising daily and eating a healthy diet. But Singh isn’t hanging up his running shoes forever, he will continue to run just shorter distances.  Singh will turn 102 in a few months.
