Dear Matt and Tamsen, I’m an independent career woman, I may get lots of money if not more than, then I go out with, so is it okay for me to pay on dates? My mother says no, my friends say yes. Matt?

Matt: It’s absolutely not okay to pay on dates. You know when guys go out together they split the check. So when a man and woman goes out and she offers to pay, what she does is she actually reduces herself becoming one of the boys and it’s really not attractive to guys. Honestly, the only guys that’s attracted to are the cheap guys. And you don’t want to be with a cheap man.

Tamsen: No, because you’ll be paying for him the rest of your life. I completely understand it, I worked my whole life and I always looked to myself as an independent career woman but when it comes to paying the check and especially in the beginning we’re not talking about two and three years down the line, we’re talking about in the beginning when you are dating and his courting you, he needs to pick up the check. Let him take control in that way. So if you want to reach for anything in your purse you got to reach for your lip gloss and put it on or if you ever take your purse, you go to the bathroom, if you’re not comfortable with him paying the check.

Matt: What you’re also doing is lowering the bar in the way that he has treat you. He’s financially not too responsible. He might be emotionally not too responsible and you know in every other way the potential relationship he’s not going to care that much. So don’t do that. Chivalry is back baby, let him pay.
