Dr. Mona covers the basics of the Ornish Diet (low-fat) diet. This diet emphasizes that no more than 10% of your total daily calories come from fat.
How to Lose Weight: Ornish Diet
If you’re big into education and being able to understand everything that you do, the low-fat or Ornish diet might be for you. Now Dean Ornish is a physician in Northern California who is one of the few people to endorse the diet that is actually been shown to reverse blockages in your heart and with his method, not only a diet but it’s a lifestyle program as well which includes stress reduction. The pinnacle of achievement in this particular diet when you follow it correctly is that if you had heart disease in the past, you could potentially reverse some of that disease.
Now, the process of the Ornish or low-fat diet is that you maintain only 10% of your calories from fat and this is a challenge, I’ll have to admit. This is good fats and bad fats, no more than 10% of your total calories should come from fats. Instead, what you should do is emphasize fruits and vegetables with a slightly higher emphasis on vegetables.
Moderate intake of processed foods, particularly non-fat dairy foods, moderate intake of poultry, fish, egg whites and even meat. Avoid refined sugars and simple sugars as you’ve seen with so many of the other diets.
The Ornish diet also says avoid alcohol. Good carbs are the carbs that will help you feel fuller longer and that will have a very low, low component of fats and those would be beans, fruits and vegetables and grains. So that would be the mainstay of your diet.
Now critics say that it is just unrealistic because it’s difficult for people to adhere to a diet with only 10% of fats. So that is the main criticism. There are others though because the Ornish or low-fat diet says you can only have 10% of your total calories and fats. It does not distinguish between good fats and bad fats and as we’ve learned already we do need some good fats to maintain the integrity of our bodies.
The other thing as I said earlier is you need to know how to read a food label and you need to understand some of the other basic principles of this particular diet. So if you’re high into education, this might be the diet for you but remember restricting your diet to 10% of fats is at the very least a challenge.
