Guide to Mykonos, Santorini and Athens
From beach spots, night spots, and city spots, Greece has a range of things to offer. Party it up, get relaxed, and take in 4000 years of history in any of Greece’s cities, towns, and island.
Mykonos is one of the world’s best holiday destinations. It combines a historical journey with white sandy beaches, crystal blue seas, and its unrivaled party scenes. The Mykonos windows have become a famous landmark. They are the first thing you see approaching the island from seas and they stand on a tall—overlooking the ocean. The white walled buildings in Mykonos add to its pure, relaxing feelings. The white washing also keeps the buildings cool. Mykonos beaches are perfect for relaxing, swimming, and soaking up the sun.
Being so close to the equator, Greece is a hay bead for sun worshipers. Expect to come back from a holiday in Mykonos with a deep, dark, tan. And if you’re fair, remember to cover up and bring a hat. Nothing is safe under Grecian sun.
The beaches on the southern coast of Mykonos are protected from the wind and they are all sandy. However, they can be ultra busy during summer. If you’re after something more relaxing, hire a car or motorbike and head the northern coast. If you can handle the busy beaches and would love to party with all your fellow 10 tourists, head to one of Mykonos’ night clubs.
Mykonos is renowned as the world’s best adult playground and night time is the party time. Bars, tubs, and clubs are found in the town center, but don’t expect to give rubbing shoulders with the local. This is strictly a tourist affair.
Santorini is a small archipelago of volcanic islands located in the Aegean Sea. Santorini is essentially what remains of a huge volcanic eruption that destroyed the earliest settlements of what was formally a single island. Its spectacular physical beauty and its wild courtesy have made the island one of Europe’s tourist hot spots.
Santorini’s beaches are made up of volcanic sand. This means that instead of white sandy shores, everything is black. It might not make your ten shimmer in the sunlight, but it certainly were seen. The black sand comes from the lava that spewed from the volcanic eruption which has been noted as one of the biggest ever recorded.
In 1967, scientists began to excavate parts of Santorini, looking for archeological ruins captured in the ancient lava. Only a small portion of what was once a town has been discovered, but structures including buildings with eight-meter high walls have been uncovered. They had even found hikes with running water in them, the oldest such mechanics ever to be found.
Athens, a city of mythology, culture, knowledge, and philosophy, and today a city of a million smells, sights, tastes, and sensations waiting to be uncovered. Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world that has changed and grown to incorporate modern life.
At the center of Athens lies the Acropolis. The Acropolis is a flat top rock that rises out of the center of Athens. And on top of it lies the ancient Parthenon. The Parthenon built around 430 BC was a temple for the Greek goddess Athena and is considered to be one of the high points of Greek art.
In 2007, the Greek government commenced building of a new museum to showcase antiques from the Acropolis. Displays include sculptures, frizzes, and other relics. The museum was originally designed to house the Parthenon’s elegant marbles that were sold to the British Museum. But so far, they have not been returned to Greece.
