Thousands of demonstrators gathered in cities across Brazil to rally against what they see as poor public services, police violence and government corruption. The marches began earlier this month over an increase in bus and subway fares but quickly gained support as police used heavy-handed tactics to quell the demonstrations. Last week police fired rubber bullets and tear gas in clashes that injured more than 100 people, including 15 journalists.
