(Image Source: The New York Times ) BY BRIAN BONDUS     1,400 Boy Scout leaders gathered in Texas Thursday set to vote by secret ballot on whether to allow gay scouts in the organization. The group would still ban gay adult leaders.   This conversation stems back 13 years, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against allowing gay members in the Boy Scouts citing the organization could set its membership standards. (Via ACLU )   But that was more than a decade ago and the Boy Scouts president voiced support for the proposal Wednesday in USA Today .    “No matter what your opinion is on this issue, America needs Scouting, and our policies must be based on what is in the best interest of our nation's children.” Other supporting groups include GLAAD — which advocates for zero discrimination in the organization, but says the proposal is only a step in the right direction. Perhaps not surprisingly, the proposal is being met with plenty of opposition. OnMyHonor is an organization formed by parents and scout leaders dedicated to fight against abortions and gay marriages. It’s asking its members to vote no on the proposal. Religious groups are chiming in as well. More than 70 percent of Boy Scout troops are sponsored by religious institutions. Several Baptist leaders took a stand against allowing gay scouts in and released this video last week featuring a former Eagle Scout. “A scout is clean guys. Homosexuality is against the moral code the Boy Scouts present. It’s against the moral code in Christianity.” (Via Baptist Press ) However other religious groups didn’t come out as strongly against the proposal. The Catholic Church said it would not abandon scouting as long as gay adult leaders are not involved. (Via National Catholic Committee on Scouting ) And the Mormon Church  even came out and indicated support. So what else is at stake in this vote? NBC News reports activists have pressured corporate sponsors to withdraw their funding to the Boy Scouts if the groups does not drop its discriminatory policies. And The New York Times notes that many believe once gay scouts are allowed it's a slippery slope before gay adult leaders are allowed as well. “The Scouts will soon be forced to allow gay leaders, too, whether by lawsuits or the simple lack of logic in forcing a gay Eagle Scout to quit the day he turns 18.” Thursday’s vote will impact three million youth scouts and the decision will impact troops across the country. Partisans on both sides have threatened to withdraw from the organization depending on the outcome.
