Chinatown is an area of 1 square mile where 10,000 people live. The older people referred to as Guchachui or buffalo cart water because in the olden days that’s how they used to transport the water. It's interesting that a country that’s three quarters Chinese wouldn’t be the Chinatown at all. But this is where you find the more traditional Chinese in Singapore.

There's a wide variety of unusual remedies to be found here, snake skin, flying lizard, and a host of peculiar herbs and tonics are meant to be used medicinally. The use of ginseng which is now widespread throughout the world for its energy giving and therapeutic property began long ago in the east.

There seems to be a cure for everything in baskets, barrels and bottles. Over a century has passed since they settled, but crafts, people, and traders still honor the old ways. Nearly all of the little markets have a small altar complete with podiums and incense offerings.
