The first crane egg is laid in over 400 years. Cranes are among the beautiful birds in the world. It was an exciting day for the British conservationists working on the Great Crane Project when one of their hand-raised fowl laid an egg. This is the first time a common crane has laid an egg in Western Britain in over 400 years, and these cranes had been carefully raised and introduced to the Somerset Levels and Moors area in the hopes they would produce offspring. Common cranes were plentiful in Britain until almost entirely driven to extinction as a breeding bird around 1600 by hunting and habitat loss. In 2010 the Great Crane Project began raising and reintroducing cranes to their historical environments. The egg is under constant guard to protect it from being stolen by collectors. Egg collecting was outlawed in the country about 60 years ago, but the problem persists. One of the biggest offenders is Matthew Gonshaw, who in 2011 was found to be in possession of over 700 wild bird eggs including many rare species.
