If you're mathematically challenged, try an electrical brain shock. Finally – a quick, painless procedure for those of us who are bad at math.Researchers from the UK and Austria found that by zapping people’s brains with electrical currents they were able to learn certain math skills faster. To perform the experiments the researchers gathered 25 people. They were each hooked up to a transcranial apparatus, but only 13 of them received electric pulses to their prefrontal cortexes. After 5 days the stimulated subjects learned math more quickly than the un-stimulated ones. Learning materials included both math facts and calculations. Six months later in a surprise retesting, the initial problem solving skill increase was still present, but the ability to more quickly memorize facts had faded. The technique is still in its rudimentary and experimental phases, but in the meantime there are other ways to give your math skills a shot of adrenaline. Some experts recommend taking advantage of daily opportunities. At the grocery store try estimating your grocery bill as you fill your cart, working out the per-ounce price of a product, and figuring sales tax to help keep your math brain in shape.
