David Prager: Hey, this is David Prager you're watching App Judgment. Today we're going to be looking at little iPhone called Chess with Friends. So I'm putting this person right now and so I'm all the white pieces. I don't know have a defense right here.
Male: You don’t have a defense right.
David Prager: So Chess with Friends is about one of the oldest games in history it’s called chess and its quite frankly the best application for the iPhone right now that you can use to play chess against your friends. In the game you’re able to set up games with anyone on your contact list. It will automatically check to see if they're capable of playing that game with you. You can do it by phone number or by user name within the application itself. Within the game itself you can open up a chat window and make comments to who your opponent is, so you can give commentary feedback, you can chide with them, you can make fun of them or you can praise them.
But if the queen comes down here what's going to keep me from losing this?
Male: Yeah, you move that button, right? That is just okay.
David Prager: So I didn’t play a lot of chess growing up but one of the coolest things about this game is that I can actually click on any piece on the entire board .When it’s my turn it will put a little highlights on all the places the worth which is certain piece can move on the board. I can tell it to move to that space and just give myself a mental image of what it looks like. It will move the piece there so I can take a look at the board before I actually hit submit and see where pieces is going to go. So one of the most useful features for me is the fact that I can always go back to look at the previous moves that I've made. I can't take them back but I can go back as early as I want with the back button and they’ll just go move by move by move of where I've been. I think that the biggest con about this game is the fact that every single move resides on the central servers that run the game.

So the problem for me is one of the coolest times for me to play this game is actually being there in person with the game. I think if I design the game and maybe it’s a future feature they’ll make it so that you can communicate to your opponent via Bluetooth and have kind of an offline version and have it sync with the server later it that’s what you wanted to do.

Male: Those games are easy to win because it takes so long and you can go back to it a week later.
David Prager: Yeah, yeah.
Male: And you know who to play the next move.
David Prager: Yeah.

Male: Speed chess, see they have all the timer right there, right. Beat the old timers, they only have some of these seconds.
David Prager: Yeah, I know. And so in this it would be impossible to have the timer because you’d have to know that you're buddy who can be in freaking New York City or right here you’d have to know. Chess with friends is a free application. It’s arguably at least in my mind the best existing chess application. I never even played chess until I got this. It actually taught me the game and got me invigorated and excited about it and it seems an absolute no-brainer. But if you're interested in playing it kind of imperative turn by turn game. See this is absolutely a must download.
