On the second night of the 2012 Democratic National Convention the Comeback Kid took to the prime time stage and rallied the troops for President Barack Obama.
“I want Barack Obama to be the president of the United States and I proudly nominate him to be the standard bearer of the Democratic Party.”
In a 48-minute speech former President Bill Clinton hit all the high notes and wowed the crowd and even some Republicans.
Castellanos: “This convention is done. This will be the moment that probably re-elected Barack Obama.”
Schmidt: “ … that could hold the attention of a crowd, have them yelling and screaming. Speaking for three-quarters of an hour. I mean I wish to God as a Republican we had someone on our side who had the ability to do that.”
As usual The Fix himself, Chris Cillizza, ranked the winners and losers of the night. The Washington Post pundit was so impressed he put Clinton in the winners category twice saying:
Cillizza: “He was the explainer-in-chief without seeming too preachy. He was full of Southern aphorisms without being hokey. And, perhaps most importantly of all, Clinton was quite clearly having a very good time.”
But not everybody was as impressed. On Twitter former Bush spokesperson Ari Fleischer tweeted:
Fleischer: “In '08, Clinton gave impassioned speeches on behalf of Hillary to D voters-and it didn't work. Popularity is hard to transfer.”
And as soon as the speech was over the Romney-Ryan campaign tried to contrast 42 and 44, and refocus the agenda on Obama’s economic record by releasing a statement that begins with:
“When it comes to the state of the economy, President Obama just can’t match President Clinton.”
But Democrats and Republicans seem to agree Bubba gave a heck of a speech and Barry has a pretty high bar to meet when he delivers his acceptance speech Thursday.
