ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) One person was killed and at least seven injured as Alawite and Sunni gunmen clashed in Tripoli in northern Lebanon on Sunday (May 19), the state-run National News Agency said. The Lebanese army deployed in the districts of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen, shooting back on the continuous clashes in an attempt to stop them. Fighting in that area of Tripoli between Alawite and Sunni militants has become common during the more than two-year conflict in Syria. Bab al-Tabbaneh is dominated by Lebanese Sunni Muslims who support the Sunni-led uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Jabal Mohsen is an enclave of Lebanese Alawites, the same Shi'ite Muslim offshoot to which the Syrian leader belongs. Tensions over the two-year civil war in Syria have frequently led to street fighting in Tripoli.
