A fire that burned for hours heavily damaged the interior of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church on Valley Street Thursday night, sending clouds of smoke into the air and causing a partial roof collapse, but causing no injuries. There is heavy fire damage in an area behind the altar and under the church’s slate roof, and smoke and water damage elsewhere, Fire Chief Marc Scrivener said Friday morning. But there were no further roof collapses overnight, and the building can be fixed, he said.
